XXL: What were your initial feelings on release day finally knowing that your debut album was out and actually in stores? The week of her album release, she spoke with XXL on the release of her debut LP, the lack of features on her project and the five songs she wishes she wrote. Songs like “Spotless Mind” and “To Love & Die” help us gaze into Jhene’s vulnerabilities and teaches us that there are no victors in love and war. While she could have nabbed features from rap heavyweights Drake, Big Sean or Kendrick Lamar, she opted to ride solo for the most part. An album laden with candor and captivating lyrics anchors the ship that is Jhene. After wooing critics with her first major label EP, Sail Out, the Def Jam signee upped the ante this time around with debut album, Souled Out, which dropped last week. Jhene Aiko is etching herself into place as the new songbird of hip-hop.
